Prime Time For Pinehurst Vex Robotics

Many will be familiar with Pinehurst Robotics’ 2011 achievements, winning a spot at the world championships in Florida. On a roll, the team aptly named ‘Prime Robotics’ have successfully taken out a number of awards this term, including earning a place at the Vex World Championships for the second year running.

Competing in the National Championships tournament at the TelstraClear Pacific Event Centre for their place at the Worlds, Pinehurst Vex team was awarded the Excellence Award for the Middle School Division in recognition for their hard work and consistent level of achievement in monthly scrimmages.

The team also collected two further awards this season. A Community Award, winning a trophy and $500, for bringing members of the community together for the Hobsonville RSA ‘invitational’. Organised by Mark Glover, they invited teams from four schools with the RSA provided a cup and prize money. Mark Glover also won the team further recognition with his Autodesk Inventor entry into the online Autodesk Inventor Challenge. The entry made its way into the top 6 finalists in the world. In recognition they were awarded the NZ top entry, winning a certificate and cheque for $250 toward parts.

The excellence award entitles the Vex team to a place at the VEX World Competition, held in April at the Anaheim Convention Centre in Los Angeles, where they will compete in the Middle School Division against 160+ schools from around the World.

In the coming weeks, the team will be perfecting the robot design and working on their competition skills. As with any international competition, the team is also currently raising sponsorship to cover travel costs through a number of different ventures. If you are interested in supporting the team feel free to contact Stephen Fiet, on 414 0960.
