Pinehurst Students Raise Thousands for Charity
Pinehurst Senior College students raised more than $7000 for the Cancer Society after organising a Clip for Cancer evening, held at the Pinehurst School gymnasium last week.
The event saw 11 Pinehurst Senior College students, two parents and one brave teacher stepping onto the stage to have their heads shaved in front of hundreds of supporters to raise cancer awareness and contribute to the cancer society.
Every student involved raised a large amount of money through sponsorship prior to the event with the evening offering a chance for guests to get involved though bidding by auction for each of the participants – the winner was then given the opportunity to shave a head. This, along with a “Crazy Hairstyle” competition, saw generous donations from the audience, with one participant raising $700 with bids alone.
Cancer Society Auckland Division CEO John Loof was thrilled with the outcome and commented on the pleasant atmosphere that the school had.
“I really enjoyed last night for a number of reasons. It was wonderful to be surrounded by so many positive, caring and community minded young people. They were really prepared to put their ‘heads on the block’ so to speak, and get in behind our cause, he said.”
Already, students are planning next year’s Clip for Cancer event, with the hopes of making it even bigger. For now though, the students involved are focusing on finding some hats and sun screen!
Our thanks goes to Sarah from Hype Hair Spa, supporters of Pinehurst School, who kindly gave up her time to tidy the shaven heads of all participants.
