Health & Safety

A Precautionary Approach to the Use of Wireless Technology in School and at Home.

Pinehurst relies on advice from the Ministry of Health about exposures to Wi-Fi signals in New Zealand Schools. Exposure to Wi-Fi signals, both from the access points and devices, are very low. On this basis Wi-Fi in schools does not pose a health risk to children or staff. However, there is growing awareness from both New Zealand and overseas research that constant long term exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) also called radio frequency radiation (RFR) released from use of wireless technology may have a negative impact on people’s health and well-being. Children, in particular, may be most susceptible. As such, Pinehurst School is taking a precautionary approach to minimise EMR exposure to our students when they use wireless technology at school. We suggest a similar approach be taken at home.

1. When using a device for non-internet use, students are taught to disable the Wi-Fi setting by using flight mode.

2. When using a device for internet access, they device is kept away from the body as much as possible placing it on tables or floors.

3. Restrict the use of devices to an average of one hour per day at school for Year 1 - 6 students.

4. Desktop computers in our Primary ICT lab all have an Ethernet cable connection. They do not use wireless. All four ICT labs have Ethernet connections as do classroom based computers. These remain connected by Ethernet cables when replaced.

5. Students throughout the school are encouraged to use Ethernet connections where possible at home and at school.

6. Consider turning of Wi-Fi at home when it’s not in use.
