Other Tertiary Providers
There are a range of other providers whom offer tertiary qualifications from Certificate to Degree level in a wide variety of areas. These providers are broken into two categories depending on whether they receive Government funding or not. Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics represents 19 institutions in New Zealand that come under this category. Traditionally they were the providers of trades training and while this remains a focus for their courses many now offer a range of more practical degrees and often offer programmes in conjunction with Universities. Each institution has courses that reflect their geographic area and the training needs of the community they are located in as well as offering other more general qualifications. There are also 3 Whanaga’s which teach courses in the Maori language or with a Maori focus.
The other group of institutions are the private training establishments (PTE’s) which are privately funded and cover a wide range of course levels and qualifications. Some have University like status and are affiliated to overseas Universities while others offer basic level courses for those who have not been successful in the schooling system or target a specific area like English Language courses. Many provide an alternative pathway to University in situations where this is not achieved at school or offer courses in a specific niche area that links more directly into work force requirements. Most of the courses offered at PTE’s are NZQA approved and the resulting qualifications are registered on the qualifications framework but do check if considering a course as some are not.
The following are only a few of the PTE’S that may be of interest:
