Doing a student exchange is one option that can be considered either during senior schooling or between schooling and University. It is also possible to spend a gap year exploring New Zealand and working on a casual basis. This

Another option is to gain overseas travel/study experience while at university. All the major New Zealand universities have programmes allowing students to apply to study abroad for a semester, while paying NZ university fees. The student needs to provide the cost of air fares and accommodation though some universities do have scholarships that help towards the costs involved.
