Pinehurst Year 1-8 Basketball 2015

Author -  Shannon Sager

2015 was a fantastic year for Pinehurst Primary Basketball, with 6 teams entered in two different leagues.
Our Year 1 and Year 2 teams (Panthers and Tigers) played in the NZ Breakers League on a Thursday afternoon. This league caters to developing our young players in a fun, non-competitive environment. Our Pinehurst students have thrived under this model, and progressed significantly during the year. Our Year 2 team is now ready and looking forward to stepping up to the competitive Year 3/4 league in 2016.
Year 3 and Year 4 Pinehurst teams (Flyers and Titans) also played in the NZ Breakers league on a Wednesday afternoon. This league is a competitive league, divided into Grades after a grading period each Semester. Congratulations to both teams on a very strong season, and to the Year 4 Flyers who were the winners of the C Grade in Semester 2! Watch out for the Titans in 2016 – they will again be playing in this competition, this time as Year 4’s!
Our Year 5 and 6 students played in two different leagues this season, with our older more experienced players moving to the YMCA league in Semester 2. The Pinehurst Rangers had a very good Semester at this league, winning most of their games and finishing as runners up in 5th Grade.
Our younger team of players, Pinehurst Warriors, played in the very competitive NZ Breakers Year 5/6 competition, and had a good season of growth and development, capped off with an opportunity to participate in the Court of Dreams curtain raiser before the NZ Breakers game!
A huge thank you to our Year 3-6 Professional Coach, Luuk Witteveen for all your efforts with the teams this year, and to our wonderful managers Michelle Robinson, Claudine Osborne, Vince Grey, Alfred Raphael and Chris Davis for all your support.
Our Junior College Basketball teams also had an amazing season, under the guidance of Professional Coach Cam Stuart, and Managers Dee Paranihi and Alfred Raphael.
Congratulations to both teams on your commitment and passion in 2015. There was significant growth and personal development in both teams.
Pinehurst Lakers (Year 8) won Boys League 6 in Semester 1, and were graded into League 4 in Semester 2. After a fantastic Semester 2, they narrowly lost the final by 2 points, finishing as Runners up in Semester 2. An exceptional achievement. All the best to all our Lakers players for College Basketball in 2016.
Pinehurst Mavericks (Year 7/8) competed in Boys League 10, and saw huge improvement over the year. With a few player changes at the end of Semester 1, the team reconsolidated over Semester 2, and continued to build on their games week to week.
I look forward to another successful year of Basketball in 2016. Registrations for 2016 Basketball open in February.
