Pinehurst Hockey 1st XI versus Kristin 2nd XI Review 29 April 2015

The lyrics from the Beverley Knight song, ‘Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda.’, would have been very fitting for our team. The evening started well. Between the sharp, intense showers and beams of a late afternoon sun, slowing dying in the west, our young, keen men played some fine shots. The match unfolded slowly but it appeared Pinehurst would be able to dominate the Kristin team upon their hallowed plastic turf.
Within minutes the score line was 2:1 in favour of Pinehurst. The underlining trend was the sheer effort and determination our team were using to frustrate the opposition and take command of the field.
The game continued at pace as the sun dipped below the horizon and the flood lights gently bathed the area in a whitish glow. After half time the onslaught of Pinehurst continued and Kristin were on thin ice. One more goal from each team brought the score to 3:2. Pinehurst were spending about eighty percent of the time in the Kristin half and slogging away in the ‘D’ but all to no avail.
In the final minutes Pinehurst made several attempts to glide the ball past their keeper but the shots lacked skill, aggression and punch. A long range clearance sealed the fate of Pinehurst, as a very lucky rebound from our goal post landed at the feet of one of their team who nailed it into the goal.
The final result was three all and was a poor reflection of what shoulda, woulda or coulda happen.
