JC Water Polo Winners

Author -  Shannon Sager

On Tuesday, 1 July, while a winter storm raged outside, the Pinehurst JC water polo team waited poolside ready to give everything in the Grade C final match against rivals Murrays Bay.

The 1 July game was the culmination of the first semester’s competition and Pinehurst had good reason to feel confident. With only one loss and one draw, they had come away from every other game in the first semester with wins. Plus, they had beaten Murrays Bay before and were quietly optimistic they could beat them again. Only, nothing went in their favour that night.

Earlier that day Glenfield Pool had closed to the public because of a leak and it was uncertain whether the games would even take place. Then, several hours before the game started, a player fell and fractured her arm, and, with another away for the holidays and a third off with an injury, the team could only field seven players. No subs. Everyone had to play a full game – no breaks - and one of the seven had the flu.

By comparison, Murrays Bay looked strong; just as hungry for a win and with three subs eager to keep the pressure on. Pinehurst had to dig deep. And they did.

According to spectators the game was nerve-wracking and intense. The final score of 5-4 to Pinehurst was a well-deserved win for the whole team and saw them emerge as the Grade C champions.

Semester Two started with an easy win by default for Pinehurst but that could be their last easy victory because the grades have been redrawn and this semester Pinehurst will play stronger teams in Grade B. We wish them good luck!
