Lydia Ko may have left Pinehurst College last year but golf at the school continues to grow from strength to strength.
Recently the Pinehurst top team team narrowly lost to St Kents in the semi finial match of the Inter-Collegiate Premier 9 hole Golf Competition. St Kents went on to win the Premier Auckland competition beating the National Champions, Massey in the final.
On Monday the 11th the same team went and played at Muriwai Golf Course in the North Harbour Secondary Intercollegiate Golf Championships. The main format was an individual gross competition with the best three scores to count. All four of our students played remarkably well on the tough Muriwai course producing excellent scores.
Brian Park shot a level par 72, Zuyi Li and Subin Wui scored one over 73’s and Kit Bittle recorded a two under back nine to finish on two over. The total of the three best scores was only two over par which was just good enough to win the Championship by one shot from the current National Champions, Massey.
Needless to say the team were very pleased and proud of their amazing achievement and thoroughly enjoyed the journey back to school.
To achieve such a team result the individual placings also has to be good. Brian played brilliantly to come second behind the Massey top player, Subin and Zuyi were tied for third place and Kit came fifth. All in all there were 9 teams competing consisting of 36 players. The final positions in both gross and nett (less handicap) were as follows:
Pos. School Gross Pos. School Nett
1st Pinehurst 218 1st Pinehurst 212
2nd Massey 219 2nd= Massey 220
3rd Wentworth 226 2nd= Wentworth 220
4th Kristin 1 241 4th Rangitoto 224
5th Rangitoto 245 5th Takapuna 1 225
6th Takapuna 1 256 6th Kristin 1 228
7th Westlake 261 7th Westlake 239
I would like to congratulate the team for a wonderful and momentous result and wish them well in the upcoming Stroke Play Championships at Redwood Park Golf Club on the 25th May. I would also like to thank Cyndie Augustin for chaperoning and looking after the team.
